The 12 Houses in a Kundli: What Each Bhava Governs and How to Read Them
2026-08-01 · 7 min read

A Kundli has 12 houses, called bhavas, and each one governs a department of life: the 1st your body and self, the 7th marriage, the 10th career, the 11th income. The house names the subject, the planets in it and the strength of its lord describe how that subject unfolds, and the Dasha tells you when.
That last sentence is the part most online guides leave out. Knowing that the 7th house means marriage is the easy half. Knowing how to read it is the work.
What is a bhava (house) in a Kundli?
Bhava means a state of being. In Jyotish, the twelve bhavas are twelve divisions of the sky as it stood at your birth, counted from the Lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact time and place of birth. That is why birth time matters so much: shift it by two hours and the Lagna changes, and the whole house structure rotates with it.
Two clarifications worth making early:
- A Rashi is a sign, a fixed segment of the zodiac. A bhava is a house, a segment of your personal chart. Most Indian practice uses whole sign houses, so one Rashi sits in one house, but a sign is not a house.
- Every chart has all twelve houses. No one is missing a house. What varies is which sign falls where, and which of the nine grahas occupy which bhava.
If you want the wider picture of what a chart contains before going house by house, start with what your Kundli actually reveals.
What does each of the 12 houses govern?
Here is the classical set of significations, with the Sanskrit name of each bhava and its natural significator (karaka), following the framework laid out in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
| House | Sanskrit name | Governs | Natural karaka |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Tanu Bhava | Body, self, constitution, temperament, general fortune | Sun |
| 2nd | Dhana Bhava | Accumulated wealth, speech, food, immediate family | Jupiter |
| 3rd | Sahaja Bhava | Courage, initiative, younger siblings, short travel, skill of hand | Mars |
| 4th | Sukha Bhava | Mother, home, land and property, vehicles, inner contentment | Moon |
| 5th | Putra Bhava | Children, intelligence, education, past merit (purva punya), mantra | Jupiter |
| 6th | Ari Bhava | Illness, debt, opposition, litigation, daily work and service | Mars, Saturn |
| 7th | Kalatra Bhava | Marriage, spouse, partnerships, business alliances | Venus |
| 8th | Ayu Bhava | Longevity, upheaval, inheritance, hidden matters, research | Saturn |
| 9th | Bhagya Bhava | Fortune, dharma, father, teachers, higher learning, pilgrimage | Jupiter |
| 10th | Karma Bhava | Career, profession, status, public standing, action in the world | Sun, Saturn |
| 11th | Labha Bhava | Income and gains, elder siblings, friends, fulfilment of desires | Jupiter |
| 12th | Vyaya Bhava | Expenditure, loss, foreign lands, retreat, sleep, moksha | Saturn |
Note how many houses carry more than one meaning. The 6th is illness and the strength to overcome opposition. The 12th is loss and liberation. A competent reading picks the meaning that fits the question, the Dasha and the rest of the chart, rather than reciting the whole list.
How are the houses grouped in classical Jyotish?
The twelve are not weighed equally. Parashari method sorts them into overlapping groups, and these groupings are what turn a list of meanings into a method.
| Group | Houses | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Kendra (angles) | 1, 4, 7, 10 | Pillars of the chart. Planets here act with force and visibility |
| Trikona (trines) | 1, 5, 9 | Houses of dharma, merit and fortune. The most benefic positions |
| Dusthana | 6, 8, 12 | Houses of difficulty: illness, upheaval, loss. Also of resilience and release |
| Upachaya (growing) | 3, 6, 10, 11 | Houses that improve with time and effort. Even hard planets do well here eventually |
| Maraka | 2, 7 | Houses connected with the limits of life span in classical texts |
The Upachaya group is the one worth remembering if you are anxious about a difficult placement. Saturn in the 6th or Mars in the 3rd is not a life sentence. Those houses are built to reward effort, and results tend to strengthen through the second half of life.
What are the four purusharthas in the chart?
The twelve houses also divide into four groups of three, matching the four purusharthas, the classical aims of human life. This is the most elegant idea in house analysis and it makes the sequence easy to remember.
- Dharma (purpose): houses 1, 5, 9
- Artha (resources): houses 2, 6, 10
- Kama (desire and enjoyment): houses 3, 7, 11
- Moksha (release): houses 4, 8, 12
Read down the columns and the chart tells a story: you find your nature (1), earn from it (2), desire through it (3), and seek peace within it (4), then repeat the cycle at a higher octave three more times.
Which houses are read for marriage, career, money and children?
Clients almost always arrive with one of four questions. No single house answers any of them.
| Question | Houses read | Karaka |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage and spouse | 7th primarily, with the 2nd (family), 4th (domestic comfort) and 8th (the marital bond and in-laws) | Venus, and Jupiter for a woman's chart |
| Career and profession | 10th primarily, with the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 11th | Sun, Saturn, Mercury |
| Money and gains | 2nd (what is held) and 11th (what flows in), against the 12th (what flows out) | Jupiter |
| Children and education | 5th primarily, with the 9th and the 4th | Jupiter |
Marriage questions in particular are never settled by the 7th house alone. Guna Milan and the placement of Mars belong in the same conversation, which is covered in the guide to Kundli matching for marriage.
How do you actually read a house?
Four factors, in this order, then timing.
- The occupants. Which grahas sit in the bhava, and are they natural benefics or malefics in this chart.
- The house lord. Which planet rules the sign on that house, where it sits, and how strong it is. A weak 10th lord in the 12th describes a career very differently from a strong one in the 10th.
- The aspects. Which planets throw their drishti onto the house. Jupiter's aspect protects; Saturn's slows and tests.
- The karaka. The natural significator from the table above must itself be sound. Venus afflicted in a marriage question matters even if the 7th house looks clean.
Only then comes timing. A promise in the chart delivers during the period of the planets that carry it, which is read through the Vimshottari Mahadasha sequence. A strong 10th house with no supporting Dasha until your forties explains a slow start far better than any single placement does.
What the houses cannot tell you
A house shows a tendency and a likely shape, not a fixed outcome. Jyotish is offered as guidance, not as guaranteed prediction, and no honest reading will tell you that a placement seals your marriage, your health or your income. Free apps that generate a paragraph per house are working from the occupants alone, which is roughly a quarter of the method, and that is why their output so often fails to match a real life.
A chart is a diagnosis, not a sentence. The houses tell you which departments of life carry weight for you, where effort pays and where patience is required. What you do with that is still yours. You can see the range of readings offered on the services page.
Frequently asked questions
- How many houses are there in a Kundli?
- There are 12 houses, called bhavas, in every Kundli. They are the twelve divisions of the chart counted from the Lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your moment of birth. Every Kundli has all twelve, so nobody is missing a house. What differs from person to person is which sign falls on each house and which planets sit in it.
- Which house is most important in a Kundli?
- The 1st house, the Lagna, is the reference point for the whole chart, because every other house is counted from it and it signifies the body, constitution and temperament. After that, importance depends on your question: the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career, the 5th for children and education. A good reading weighs the Lagna first, then the house that matches your concern.
- What is the difference between a house and a Rashi?
- A Rashi is a sign of the zodiac, a fixed 30 degree segment of the sky such as Mesha or Vrishabha. A house is a division of your personal chart, counted from your Lagna, and it names a department of life such as wealth or marriage. In the whole sign method used across most of Indian astrology, one Rashi occupies one house, but the two are not the same thing.
- Which houses are considered bad in Vedic astrology?
- The 6th, 8th and 12th are traditionally called dusthanas, the houses of difficulty, because they signify illness and debt, upheaval and longevity, and loss and expenditure. Calling them bad is too blunt. The 6th also gives the capacity to defeat opposition, the 8th governs research and inheritance, and the 12th governs retreat, foreign residence and moksha.
- Can you read one house on its own?
- No, and this is the most common mistake. A house is read through four things together: the planets sitting in it, the strength and placement of its lord, the aspects falling on it, and the natural karaka for that subject. The Vimshottari Dasha then tells you when the result is likely to show. One planet in one house, read alone, will mislead you.
