Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha: The 7 Rules That Cancel Them

Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha are the two heaviest failures in Guna Milan, worth 8 and 7 gunas between them. Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same Nadi. Bhakoot dosha arises when their Moon signs fall 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart. Both have recognised classical cancellations, and seven of them are set out below.

These two kutas are why so many matches that look fine on paper come back with an alarming score, and why so many families treat an automated report as a refusal. The tradition is more careful than that. It names the problem, and in the same breath it names the conditions under which the problem does not stand.

What is Nadi dosha and why does it carry 8 gunas?

Nadi refers to the channels through which prana moves in the body, and in matching it stands for constitution. Each of the 27 nakshatras is assigned to one of three Nadis, following the Ayurvedic humours: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha). The assignment runs in a fixed zigzag through the nakshatra order.

NadiNakshatras
Adi (Vata)Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
Madhya (Pitta)Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada
Antya (Kapha)Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

The scoring is binary. Different Nadis score the full 8 points. The same Nadi scores zero, and that zero is what is called Eka Nadi dosha (Nadi classification and scoring). There is no partial credit, which is why Nadi alone can drag a match from a comfortable 28 down to 20.

The reasoning behind it is physiological rather than emotional. Two people of the same constitution are held to reinforce the same tendency rather than balance it, and the texts connect this to health and to progeny. That is the classical position. It is a reason to examine the fifth house, Jupiter and the Dasha periods in both charts, not a reason to predict anything about a particular couple.

What is Bhakoot dosha and which Rashi pairs trigger it?

Bhakoot, the seventh kuta, compares the two Moon signs directly and carries 7 points. Count the distance from one person's Rashi to the other's, both ways round. If the pair lands on one of three distances, the kuta scores zero.

PairClassical nameCounted asTraditional concern
2/12Dwirdwadasha2 signs one way, 12 the otherResources, money, give and take
5/9Nava Pancham5 signs one way, 9 the otherProgeny, shared values, fortune
6/8Shadashtaka6 signs one way, 8 the otherHealth, upheaval, daily friction

Everything else scores the full 7. Same sign scores 7 as well, since the two Rashis then share a lord.

Of the three, 6/8 is watched most closely, because the sixth house relates to illness and conflict and the eighth to sudden change. The 5/9 pair is the mildest and some schools barely flag it, since the fifth and ninth are the trine houses and the relationship between them is naturally supportive. The 2/12 pair tends to show up as mismatched instincts about spending and security rather than anything graver.

Which is more serious, Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha?

Nadi, by weight and by convention. It carries one point more, it concerns constitution and progeny rather than temperament, and most traditions will not waive it as readily. Bhakoot is the more frequently cancelled of the two in practice, because its parihara rules are simple and often satisfied.

The arithmetic matters as well. Together they hold 15 of the 36 gunas, so if both fail, the score cannot exceed 21 even with every other kuta perfect. A couple told their match scores 19 may well have six strong kutas and these two zeros, which is a very different situation from a 19 scraped together from small losses everywhere. The full weighting of all eight is in the 8 kutas of Guna Milan, and what the total is worth as a number is covered in how many gunas should match for marriage.

When is Nadi dosha genuinely cancelled?

Four conditions are accepted across most North Indian practice. Any one of them is held to lift the dosha.

  1. Same nakshatra, different Moon sign. Several nakshatras straddle two Rashis, so two people born under the same star can hold different signs. The tradition treats this as sufficient.
  2. Same Moon sign, different nakshatra. The reverse case, and equally accepted.
  3. Same nakshatra and same sign, but different padas. Each nakshatra has four padas. Births in different quarters of the same star are held not to carry the dosha.
  4. The two Moon sign lords are the same planet or mutual friends. Where Graha Maitri is already strong, many schools read the Nadi failure as neutralised rather than absolute.

A fifth rule circulates in some lineages, exempting births under a named list of nakshatras. The lists differ between sources, which is a good reason to treat that one as a school preference rather than settled doctrine, and to say so plainly rather than apply it quietly.

When is Bhakoot dosha genuinely cancelled?

Three parihara conditions come down from the classical muhurta literature, completing the seven, and any one of them cancels the pair outright.

  1. Both Rashis share the same lord. Aries and Scorpio are both ruled by Mars, Taurus and Libra by Venus, Gemini and Virgo by Mercury, Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn. A 6/8 pair such as Aries and Scorpio is cancelled on this rule alone.
  2. The two Rashi lords are mutual friends in the natural friendship scheme, for example the Sun and Jupiter, or the Moon and Mars.
  3. The two Rashi lords are in Parivartana, exchanging signs with each other. This is a strong mutual relationship in any context and it rescues the pair here.

A widely used fourth check, Jupiter aspecting the seventh house from either Lagna, is honoured by many astrologers as additional support. It belongs to the general assessment of the marriage house rather than to the strict Bhakoot parihara list, which is why it is noted separately here.

Why do free calculators get this wrong?

Because almost none of them run the parihara step. A calculator reads two birth times, derives two Moon positions, applies the eight scoring tables and prints a total. The cancellation rules require comparing sign lords, checking padas and weighing a planetary exchange, and most tools simply do not attempt it (a standard Ashtakuta matching, with its caveats).

There is a second, more ordinary failure. An incorrect birth time moves the Moon. The Moon covers a nakshatra in roughly a day, and a pada in about six hours, so an hour of error can change the nakshatra, the Nadi, the pada and sometimes the Rashi. More alarming reports come from unverified birth times than from genuine doshas. If a score has unsettled a family, the first thing to confirm is the birth data, not the remedy.

What should you do if a report shows one of these doshas?

Work through it in order, and do not let the sequence collapse into a verdict.

  1. Verify both birth times against a hospital record or a family note before anything else.
  2. Ask which kuta scored zero, not just what the total was. Nadi and Bhakoot behave differently and need naming separately.
  3. Apply the parihara rules above to the actual charts. Many flagged matches resolve here.
  4. Read the rest of both Kundlis, which Guna Milan never touches: the seventh house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsa, Mangal dosha and the running Dasha in each chart.
  5. Ask for remedies where a weakness stands. Traditional support is mantra, charity, observance and an appropriate muhurat for the wedding, offered as care in that area of life, never as a guarantee.

Nadi and Bhakoot were given the heaviest weights in the system because the areas they touch deserve attention, and the same texts that name them supply the conditions that lift them. Read together, that is the point of the method: a matching tells two families where a marriage will need care, so that the care can be given. See how Kundli matching actually works for the full sequence, or the services page for what a complete marriage matching covers.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nadi dosha in Kundli matching?
Nadi dosha occurs when the bride and groom both fall in the same Nadi, meaning their birth nakshatras belong to the same one of three groups: Adi, Madhya or Antya. Nadi is the eighth kuta of Guna Milan and carries 8 points, the most of any kuta, so sharing a Nadi scores zero there. The tradition associates it with constitution, health and progeny.
When is Nadi dosha cancelled?
The commonly accepted cancellations are: the two people share the same nakshatra but different Moon signs; they share the same Moon sign but different nakshatras; or they share the same nakshatra and sign but were born in different padas of it. Several schools add that the dosha does not apply where the Moon sign lords are the same or mutual friends. Which rule applies is a judgement on the two charts, not something a calculator settles.
What is Bhakoot dosha and is the 6/8 pair the worst?
Bhakoot dosha applies when the two Moon signs fall 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 signs apart from each other. It is the seventh kuta and carries 7 points. The 6/8 pair, called Shadashtaka, is watched most closely because the sixth and eighth houses relate to difficulty and upheaval, but all three pairs are cancelled by the same parihara rules and none of them is treated as a verdict on its own.
Can we marry if we have both Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha?
Tradition does not forbid it. Both doshas together cost 15 of the 36 gunas, which caps the score at 21, so the total will look poor even when the rest of the match is sound. The correct step is to check whether either dosha is cancelled under the classical rules, and then read the seventh house, Venus, Jupiter, the Navamsa and the Dasha periods in both charts before anyone draws a conclusion.
Does Nadi dosha affect children?
The classical association is with constitution and progeny, which is why the kuta carries the heaviest weight. It is described as an area to examine with care, not as a predicted outcome. Children and health are read from the fifth house, its lord, Jupiter and the running Dasha in each chart, and an astrologer who finds a Nadi dosha should look at those rather than issue a warning from the kuta alone.
