Retrograde Planets in Your Kundli: What the 5 Vakri Grahas Actually Change

A retrograde planet in your Kundli, called a Vakri graha, is one that appeared to move backwards through the zodiac at the moment of your birth. Only five grahas can do it: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The classical texts treat a Vakri graha as unusually strong, not damaged. It concentrates its results and delivers them indirectly.

That last word is the key. Most people meet the term through the panic around Mercury retrograde in transit, and assume an R beside a planet in their own chart is a flaw to be fixed. In the Parashari tradition it is a statement about how a graha delivers what it already promised.

What does retrograde (Vakri) mean in Vedic astrology?

Vakri is Sanskrit for twisted, crooked, winding or indirect. A Vakri graha is one in apparent backward motion, and the word apparent matters: no planet actually reverses. The effect is produced by Earth overtaking a slower outer planet, or being overtaken by a faster inner one, so the planet seems for a few weeks or months to slide backwards against the stars (apparent retrograde motion).

The Surya Siddhanta already classified eight kinds of planetary motion. Three of them, vakra, ativakra and kutila, describe retrogression, while manda, mandatara, sama, sighra and atisighra describe a planet in direct motion, which is then called margi (Vakri grahas). So the tradition had a vocabulary for degrees of speed and direction long before it had a complaint about them.

Geometry decides who can retrograde and when. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn turn Vakri when they are near opposition to the Sun, roughly the fifth to the eighth house from it. Mercury and Venus can never sit that far from the Sun, so they turn Vakri near their greatest distance from it and travel backwards through conjunction with it instead.

Which planets can be retrograde in a Kundli?

Five, and only five. The Sun and the Moon never retrograde. Rahu and Ketu always do, which is why retrogression is their ordinary condition rather than a mark against them, as covered in Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart.

How often each graha is Vakri decides how common it is in charts, and the spread is wide.

Read the right column again. Saturn is retrograde for more than a third of all time, so roughly one chart in three carries a Vakri Shani, far too common to be a rare affliction. Venus, at about seven percent, is the genuinely uncommon one. A planet also appears to stand still before it turns and again before it resumes direct motion, and those stationary days are the most concentrated part of the cycle.

Are retrograde planets strong or weak in Jyotish?

Strong, and this is measurable rather than a matter of taste. Shadbala scores each graha on six separate strengths in units called virupas, sixty of which make one rupa. The fourth of the six, Cheshta Bala or motional strength, awards a retrograde graha the full 60 virupas out of 60, the maximum available, with lesser values for slow and average motion (Cheshta Bala).

A planet retrogrades when it is closest to Earth, so it is also at its brightest and longest visible. The tradition read nearness as force.

But strength is not benefit. A graha with high Cheshta Bala has more capacity to deliver what its house, sign and ownership already assigned it, so a Vakri lord of a difficult house delivers difficulty with more conviction. This is why the honest answer to "my Saturn is retrograde, is that bad" is another question: which houses does your Saturn own, and where does it sit? The method is in how to read your Kundli step by step.

What do the classics say about a Vakri graha in exaltation or debilitation?

Here the texts disagree, and anyone who tells you there is one settled rule has not read them.

The widely quoted position comes from the Phaladeepika: a retrograde planet in its sign of debilitation behaves as though exalted, and an exalted planet that is retrograde behaves as though debilitated. The Uttara Kalamrita agrees that vakragati is comparable to exaltation, and adds that a planet joining a Vakri graha has its own strength halved. The Saravali takes a harder line, holding that exalted planets have no strength when retrograde, and that retrograde benefics confer kingship while retrograde malefics bring misery and aimless wandering (classical views on Vakri grahas).

A second school holds that a Vakri graha also gives the results of the house or sign behind the one it occupies, since that is where it is heading. The Sanketa Nidhi assigns each retrograde graha a specific house to read from its own position: the third for Mars, the fourth for Mercury, the fifth for Jupiter, the seventh for Venus and the eighth for Saturn.

What a careful astrologer takes from this is not a formula but a caution. Retrogression reverses expectations often enough that the classical authors felt obliged to warn about it. It is a reason to slow down over a chart, not a rule to apply mechanically.

What does each of the 5 Vakri grahas change?

Each graha expresses its indirectness through its own significations. Treated as tendencies to examine, not as predictions:

  • Mercury (Budha), karaka of speech and intellect, tends towards either too much speaking or too little, and towards thinking that is original but hard to communicate. Mercury also sits close to the Sun and is often combust as well, which compounds it.
  • Venus (Shukra), karaka of marriage and pleasure, tends towards unconventional alliances, and towards a difficulty in expressing affection in the expected way.
  • Mars (Mangal), karaka of energy and courage, tends towards power its owner has not learned to aim, showing as either excess force or its suppression.
  • Jupiter (Guru), karaka of wisdom and children, tends towards advice that will not stop, or distrust of one's own judgement, alongside a real capacity for an unorthodox view.
  • Saturn (Shani), karaka of labour and endurance, tends towards not knowing when to stop working, or no appetite for work at all, and towards appetite that getting what it wanted does not satisfy.

The common thread is a graha whose energy its owner has not yet learned to steer. That is a task, which is why the tradition answers it with discipline rather than a cure.

How does a retrograde planet behave in its Dasha?

This is where retrogression stops being theory. A Vimshottari Dasha hands a graha several years of charge over your life, and a retrograde Dasha lord is widely observed to produce diminishing returns: a period that opens well and thins out as it runs, or one in which settled matters reopen. Komilla Sutton notes exactly that pattern, alongside health matters surfacing during a retrograde graha's Dasha.

Two things follow. A Vakri Dasha lord suggests finishing matters early in the period rather than banking on its later years, and a transit retrogression of your current Dasha lord is worth watching, since the graha is then indirect in both frames at once. The nine periods are set out in what is a Mahadasha.

Does retrograde Jupiter stop a wedding or a new venture?

In transit, traditionally yes, and this is a genuine muhurat rule rather than superstition: marriages, housewarmings and new ventures are conventionally not scheduled while Guru is Vakri, because the graha that blesses beginnings is then indirect. Families in India still plan around it, which is why the wedding calendar has gaps no festival explains.

Two distinctions keep this proportionate. A natal retrograde Jupiter is not the same as a transit one and does not bar you from marrying. And Guru Vakri is one factor among the five limbs of the Panchang that a muhurat is built from, as set out in what is a Muhurat. If a date cannot move, an astrologer works with the rest of the chart rather than declaring it lost.

What should you do about a Vakri graha in your chart?

Four steps, in order.

  1. Confirm it. Retrogression depends on exact birth time and the ayanamsa your software uses. Check the R is really there before building anything on it.
  2. Read its ownership first. Which houses the graha rules, and which it sits in, settles whether its extra strength helps or hurts. The twelve houses of the Kundli is the place to start.
  3. Check whether its Dasha is running or near. A Vakri graha matters most in its own period.
  4. Work with its nature through upaya. The traditional mantra, fast day, charity and routine of that graha, kept consistently.

A retrograde planet is a diagnosis, not a sentence. It describes a faculty that arrives by an unusual route and asks to be handled deliberately. The tradition's own view is that a Vakri graha rewards those who stop fighting its indirectness and learn to use it. Frequently asked questions

Is a retrograde planet in a Kundli good or bad?
Neither on its own. The classical position is that a Vakri graha is unusually strong, so whatever it was already going to do it does more forcefully. A well-placed retrograde planet intensifies a good result and a badly placed one intensifies a difficult result. It is read as an amplifier, not as a verdict.
Which planets can be retrograde in Vedic astrology?
Only the five Tara grahas: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Sun and the Moon never turn retrograde, because retrograde motion is an effect of Earth's own orbit relative to another body. Rahu and Ketu are the opposite case: they are always retrograde, so it is their normal state and not a defect.
Is a retrograde planet strong or weak?
Strong in the technical sense. In the Shadbala system of six strengths, a retrograde graha receives the maximum Cheshta Bala, 60 virupas out of 60. Several classical authorities go further and treat retrogression as comparable to exaltation. What the strength is used for still depends on the planet's house, sign and ownership in your chart.
Does a retrograde planet delay marriage?
Not by itself. Marriage timing is read from the seventh house and its lord, Venus or Jupiter as the relevant karaka, the Navamsa, and the running Dasha. A retrograde Venus or seventh lord is one factor in that reading and often shows a path that doubles back, with revisited decisions, rather than a refusal. No single feature of a chart decides when a marriage happens.
Can a retrograde planet in the birth chart be corrected?
The chart cannot be changed, and no honest practitioner will claim otherwise. What the tradition offers is upaya: the mantra, charity, fast day and daily discipline of that graha, used to work with its nature rather than against it. These are offered as guidance and support, not as a guarantee of any particular outcome.
