Love Marriage or Arranged Marriage? The 6 Links in Your Kundli That Actually Matter

2026-10-19 · 8 min read

A gold line engraving of two crescent moons joined by a single unbroken thread tied in a knot at its midpoint, set against a twelve segment Rashi Chakra ring on a dark celestial background, illustrating love marriage and arranged marriage in the Kundli

Vedic astrology reads love marriage from the link between three houses, not from one. The 5th house governs romance, the 7th governs marriage, and the 11th governs a desire being fulfilled. When the 5th lord and the 7th lord connect, a love affair tends to become the marriage. When they do not, the marriage usually arrives through family. Six indications carry most of the weight.

What follows is the classical Parashari method. It describes the manner in which a marriage comes about rather than issuing a verdict, and most charts carry some indication of both paths.

What does the Kundli actually show about love marriage?

It shows the route, not the person. The tradition is comfortable with a love match and has a name for it: Gandharva vivaha, one of the eight forms of marriage set out in the Manusmriti, a union proceeding from the mutual inclination of two people without the arrangement of relatives (Gandharva vivaha in the Dharmashastra). It is a recognised form, not a lapse, so a chart leaning this way is not a chart with a problem in it.

What the Kundli will not do is name a person, confirm a particular relationship, or fix a date. It describes a tendency, and the period of life in which that tendency becomes active.

Which houses govern love and which govern marriage?

HouseWhat it governs hereWhy it matters
5thRomance, attraction, affairs of the heartWhere a relationship begins before any commitment
7thMarriage, the spouse, formal partnershipThe marriage itself, whatever route led to it
11thGain, friends, the fulfilment of a desireIt is the 5th house counted from the 7th, so it is where a love affair completes
2ndFamily, the household you joinA 7th lord here leans towards a match made within the family circle
4thHome, mother, communityA 7th lord here leans towards a match from the familiar world

The 11th house is the piece most articles leave out, and it is what separates a romance from a marriage. A 5th and 7th connection shows a relationship with marriage potential; involvement of the 11th lord is what classically suggests the desire completes. Every house signification is in the 12 houses in a Kundli.

What are the 6 indications of a love marriage?

Strongest first. One alone is a hint; three or four pointing the same way is a leaning.

1. The 5th lord and the 7th lord are connected. The most reliable of the six. The connection can be a conjunction, a mutual aspect, an exchange of signs (parivartana yoga), or either lord sitting in the other's house. The logic is direct: the ruler of romance and the ruler of marriage are doing business, so the romance has a path into the marriage.

2. The 11th lord joins that link. When the lord of the 11th is tied into the 5th and 7th connection, the tradition reads it as the desire being granted rather than merely felt. A 5th and 7th link with no 11th support often shows a long relationship that does not convert.

3. Venus is in the 5th, 7th or 11th house and well placed. Venus is the karaka of love, attraction and the spouse in a man's chart. Strong in one of these three houses and unafflicted, it indicates a marriage one chooses rather than accepts, and Venus in the 5th ties attraction directly to romance.

4. Rahu is on the 1st and 7th axis, or with Venus or the 7th lord. The most misquoted indication on the internet, so state it precisely. Rahu signifies what falls outside the expected pattern, so it is read for a marriage that breaks a convention: inter-caste, inter-faith, a different language or country, a large age gap, or a match the family did not foresee. It does not mean love. Rahu with Venus raises the intensity of an attraction and loosens the hold of custom on it, which is why it appears so often in unconventional matches. See Rahu and Ketu in your birth chart.

5. The Moon is linked to Venus or the 5th house. The Moon carries the emotional life, so tied to Venus or the 5th it points to a marriage decided on feeling rather than arrangement. Supporting evidence, not deciding evidence.

6. The Navamsa confirms it. The D9 is the marriage varga, and every claim the birth chart makes about marriage is tested there. A 5th and 7th link that survives into the Navamsa is a real leaning; one that falls apart in D9 tends not to materialise (the Navamsa (D9) chart explained).

A Mars and Venus conjunction is often listed alongside these. It signifies attraction, but on its own says nothing about marriage, which is why it is not in the six.

What points towards an arranged marriage instead?

IndicationWhat it classically suggests
7th lord in the 2nd or 4th houseA match through family or the familiar community
Jupiter in or aspecting the 7th house, no Rahu involvementA sanctioned, traditional marriage with elders' blessing
Saturn on the 7th house or its lordA deliberate, duty-weighted match, often later
No connection at all between the 5th and 7thRelationships that do not convert into the marriage
9th house strongly tied to the 7thThe route runs through elders and ritual

Notice what is absent from that list: anything negative. An arranged leaning is not a weaker chart, only a different route to the same house.

Why do so many charts show both?

Because the two categories are cleaner in language than in life. A chart with a 5th and 7th lord connection and a 7th lord in the 4th house is entirely ordinary, and it describes what most families in India would recognise at once: a couple who chose each other and then went through the family, or a proposal brought by relatives that the two people then genuinely fell into.

This is where automated "love or arranged" calculators mislead people. They force one answer out of a chart that is honestly describing a mixture. A mixed chart is not a failure of the method; it is usually the most accurate thing on the page. The useful work is saying which element leads and which Dasha period brings it forward, covered in how marriage timing is actually read.

Does the chart show an inter-caste or inter-faith marriage?

It can show the leaning, and this is Rahu's territory rather than the 5th house's. Rahu involved with the 7th house, its lord or Venus is the classical indication of a marriage outside the expected circle, and the 12th house, which signifies distant places, is read when the question is a partner abroad.

The limits matter here. The chart does not name a community, a religion or a country, and an unconventional match in the chart says nothing about whether a family will accept it. That is a human matter, and Jyotish has no business pretending otherwise.

Is a love marriage more likely to last?

The tradition does not grade marriages by how they began. The route is the 5th, 7th and 11th links described above. Durability is a separate reading: the strength and dignity of the 7th house and its lord, the condition of Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsa, and what the running Dasha periods are doing to all of it.

This is why a love match still deserves a proper matching exercise. Guna Milan compares two specific charts, so it is as relevant to a couple who found each other as to a proposal from a relative. The difference is in how the result is used: not as permission, but as a map of which areas will need patience. The method is in Kundli matching for marriage, and the heaviest objection people meet is covered in how Manglik is judged and when it is cancelled.

Where the pairing does need support, the remedies stay traditional: a Shukra or Guru related practice, a mantra kept up with discipline, charity, and attending to the ordinary thing the chart is pointing at. A remedy supports a period. It does not purchase an outcome.

In a reading the question resolves in four steps: establish the promise of marriage in the 7th house and its lord, check the 5th, 7th and 11th links for the route, test both in the Navamsa, then locate the Dasha period in which the matter becomes live. What comes out is a leaning with a window, not a label.

A chart is a diagnosis, not a sentence. It can tell you which way your life tends to arrange these things, and when the door is likely to open. It cannot tell you whom to choose. See what a full reading covers on the services page.

Astrology and numerology are offered here as guidance, not as guaranteed prediction. No reading can promise a marriage, a partner or an outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Which house in the Kundli indicates love marriage?
No single house does. Love is read from the 5th house, marriage from the 7th, and the fulfilment of a desire from the 11th. A love marriage is indicated when those houses are linked, most often by a connection between the 5th lord and the 7th lord, with the 11th house supporting it. The 7th house alone tells you about marriage, not about how it came about.
Is Rahu in the 7th house a sign of love marriage?
Rahu on the 1st and 7th axis signifies a marriage outside the expected pattern, which is not the same thing as a love marriage. It is commonly seen in inter-caste, inter-faith, long distance and second marriages, and in matches a family did not initially expect. Many love marriages have no Rahu involvement at all, and many Rahu placements produce an arranged match in unusual circumstances.
Can a Kundli predict whether I will have a love marriage or an arranged marriage?
It can show a leaning, not a verdict. The chart describes the manner in which a marriage is likely to come about, and most charts carry indications for both paths because the two are not opposites in practice. A reading gives you the leaning along with the Dasha period that is likely to be active, and leaves the decision where it belongs, with you.
Is a love marriage less likely to last than an arranged one?
The tradition does not say so. How a marriage began and how durable it is are read from different things: the manner of meeting from the 5th, 7th and 11th house links, and the durability from the strength of the 7th house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsa chart and the running Dasha periods. A love match with a strong 7th lord and an arranged match with a weak one are not comparable simply by category.
Should a love match still be checked with Guna Milan?
Yes, and for a different reason than people expect. Guna Milan compares two specific charts, so it is just as applicable to a couple who chose each other as to a proposal brought by a family. The score is not a permission slip. It flags which areas of the pairing deserve attention, and in a love match it is usually read alongside the 7th house and the Navamsa in both charts rather than as a pass or fail.
